ABOUT SHACKO

As a born and raised dog-enthusiast with the clear intent of never ever acquiring another Germen or Belgium Sheppard again, she fell in love with the first Rhodesian Ridgeback she saw. All the books in the library about RR’s were scrutinized and the hunt was on. Not knowing about the existence of the Norwegian RR-clubs, she checked the ads on the TV and the national papers and after almost two years, she brought her beloved Shacko home from Bergen.

With true determination to raise Shacko as an obedient and trusting companion, they started attending one obedience-class after another. But the beautiful picture she had started to become a puzzle; this gorgeous dog did not act according to plans! After crying buckets of tears and tearing out lots of hair, she started calling some Norwegian RR-breeders and the problem was solved : He was a typical RR with strong opinions on how SHE should behave !

They made a truce and started to cooperate with each other and the rest, as they say, - is history.

There was one major problem from the age of 5 months: Shacko was allergic to all sorts of stuff ! This resulted in blisters on his paws and several ear-infections. After spending loads of money on special food, daily shots of medicin, ointments and who knows what, they got the problem under control.

The number 5 does not go well with Shacko. At the age of 5, Bente Nygård from The Ridged Viking, spotted a Dermoid Sinus right behind Shacko’s tail-set! This is most likely a Type 5 DS, according to Niccolette Salmon Hillbertz. One terrible day we will know the truth.

The show-ring was another endurance he had to go thru with his novice owner. Doing his best to calm her down, his show-carrier was over after the Norwegian RR-special in 2000 with judge Peter Nickolson. Standing in front of the judges table with Stig “Nalle” Carlson viewing from outside the ring, Shacko’s head began to drop. As Hilde placed her hand under his jaw to lift him up, he put all his weight in her hand, closed his eyes and WENT TO SLEEP!!! His hole body was swaying ready to fall down! Embarrassed? – yes! After that day Hilde was like a sponge soaking up information about handling dogs in the show-ring! Once again, Shacko was the teacher.

P.Nickolson wrote: “Very laid back, happy competitor” on Shacko’s critiques and those words goes to describe Shacko any day. If anything, he does not waste energy! Give him a worm bed, a soft couch or a nice spot in the sun and he is content. If he can also have some human contact, you’ve made his day !

Most bitches accept his calm approach with ease. The other male dogs in his life treat him with respect in an easy manor. They quite soon know what he expects from them, and by doing so they can play around on a distance, or lie close to him in the bed. He is most happy when, not only Qi, but also Melvin is around. Melvin is definitely a major part in his flock. Shacko was The Man! He was just Great!

WHAT A DOG!
